Kevin Liu

Kevin Liu - Viscera - $100

“I've always found blood to be beautiful. I think you have to, to go into medicine. Even as a child, I always was drawn to the richness of its hue, bold, dark, and thick like a glass of red wine.

After starting medical school, my relationship with blood has become much more intimate. My days are spent seeing organs inside and out, parsing through arteries and veins in anatomy lab, and looking at individual cells blood cells in histology. Learning not just about blood itself, but how the function of every organ, every tissue, every fiber- the ability of bodies as a whole to sustain life- is completely dependent on this dark, red, fluid.

My appreciation progressed past aesthetics. Life is not green- like tender shoots through snow in springtime. Life is red- permeating its pigment through every cell in our body, pulsating with every beat of our heart, screaming out its crimson song even within the bluish tinge of our venous vasculature.“

Kevin Liu

Kevin Liu enjoys blurring the boundaries and ties between superficially unrelated subjects in his art, melding elements together to create surrealistic narratives. He favorite subjects include the human form, flora/fauna, and the sublime. He is from Boston and is currently a first year medical student in UAB's MD-PhD program.

Lauren Curwick, MD

I’m Lauren, a recent Alabama transplant pursuing my dream of becoming a surgeon. I have always loved all things creative, but I found my true passion in painting more recently. Abstract painting allows me to stray from the perfectionism I strive for in medicine and to to find balance through my acrylics. My work is inspired by simplicity and earth tones.
